30 Fabulous Tax-Free Gift Ideas for Nannies and Caregivers
December is here and the rush to get all your holiday gifts has begun. If your list is like mine, you’re buying for family, close friends, and your nanny or caregiver. While your kiddos probably had their wish list typed up, laminated, and on the fridge since July, buying for those you employ can be tricky.
When it comes to gifts for employees, you want to make sure that you are not going to have to pay additional taxes on the gift. If you’re looking for deep reading material, the Canada Revenue Agency has a slew of information on their website that explains when you can give a gift tax-free, and what types of gifts are included. Basically, the only times you can give a gift without having to pay tax on the fair market value is when the gift is given for a birthday, the birth of a child, a wedding, or a religious holiday. When it comes to the gift itself, it cannot be cash or near cash (gift cards, gift cheques, gold nuggets, or a gift that allows the employee to choose their own item), and the total value of gifts for the year must be less than $500. For more information that’s super easy to read, you can check out our blog post called A Gift That Isn’t Taxing.
